What gauge is and why it matters

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a fixed area, usually 10×10 cm (4×4 in). Even with the same yarn and needles, everyone's tension differs — so your gauge will differ. Pattern measurements are calculated from the pattern's gauge; if yours doesn't match, the finished size won't either. A difference of one stitch per 10 cm compounds into several centimeters across a sweater chest.

That's why you swatch before starting: knit at least 12×12 cm, then count stitches and rows across the center 10 cm, away from the edges.

What this calculator does

Stitch & row counts — enter your gauge and target measurements to get cast-on and row numbers instantly.

Gauge conversion — when pattern gauge and your gauge differ, convert the pattern's counts to your gauge. Useful when changing needle size doesn't quite get you there.

Shaping — distributes increases/decreases evenly: how many, every how many rows. Great for sleeves and yokes.

Blocking estimate — from pre- and post-wash swatch measurements, it computes growth rates and back-calculates the cast-on for your target size. Especially important for linen and mohair, which grow a lot in blocking.
